During last summer's show season, a new surprise event hit the scene. The new show was called Havoc, and it turned some heads in its first year of operation. The concept was to have a show run by magazine editors who wanted to give back to those who support the business. And with that mentality, it was destined to succeed.
Sport Truck's history has been full of shows put on by staffers throughout the country. It had been a while since there was an official Sport Truck event, though, so it was time to put on a new one. Louisville, Kentucky, was picked as the hometown for this new show, and its downtown convention center was to be the venue of choice. The convention center was a good pick, as the indoor benefits include not worrying about getting bitten from bugs and the luxuries of air conditioning during the show.
Thursday, August 3, we arrived... Thursday, August 3, we arrived at Ekstensive Metalworks shop. We strolled around to see what Bill had lurking in his shop. We found this H2, which is the third to be built with a full handmade frame. As you can see, Bill doesn't kid around with these trucks. Look at the mandrel bends on those framerails! | Here is our crew from Ekstensive... Here is our crew from Ekstensive that was brave enough to volunteer for the cruise to our show. As you can see, the humidity is very high in Houston, and after just one hour of loading the rig, the guys were worked from the heat. It's a good thing we were traveling in air-conditioned vehicles. (Left to right): Mitch Rall, Bill Carlton, and Eddy Miller. | By Thursday afternoon, we... By Thursday afternoon, we made it through the states of Texas and Arkansas. The Memphis skyline sure was a great site to see as we rolled on through. |
The turnout for the first event was moderate but decent enough for us to return for another. So, this year, it was on like Donkey Kong, and we had a new plan. The decision was made to take over the nation with a couple of caravans rolling across several states, each one bound for Havoc. It took just a few phone calls to pull vehicles from different parts of the country and dominate the highways leading into Louisville.
On the other end of the country,... On the other end of the country, Brandon was supposed to leave for Florida to cruise with everyone. Weather delayed his flight so much that he had to wait for the crew to run through his town of Ashville, North Carolina. Once they stopped by his town and stayed overnight, they pressed onward to Tennessee. The crowd was small, but they still made their presence known on the highway. | A couple of the cleanest 'Dimes... A couple of the cleanest 'Dimes we've seen made the cruise. Russell Jones brought out his super-clean S-10. He would have driven it, but with a 383-cid engine in it, his diesel-powered fullsize Dodge got better gas mileage. Jennifer Lacey brought her slick 'Dime dubbed "Chix Ride," all the way from Daytona, Florida, and went home with the Cover Truck of the Year Award. | |
