John Bohannon’s boulevard bruiser was fitted with the entire front suspension from a 󈨠 Corvette, including the forged aluminum upper and lower control arms, the composite, transverse-mounted monoleaf spring, and even the Vette’s vented disc rotor and four-piston caliper braking system. The install is super clean and conceals the fact that it was a real bear of a job to get crisp, responsive, and stable suspension and braking performance out of a system that&8217s part hauler, part exotic.

John had ample assistance during the suspension buildup from the crew at Robinson Racing in Sparta, Tennessee. It took a full-on team effort to hash out the details involved with swapping in a Vette suspension, especially at the rear, where the independent, five-link design with transverse monoleaf spring presented complex installation challenges which required creative solutions in order to get every component in sync and functional. After seeing this rocket roost, we can assure you that everything is indeed in sync.

As you can see from these in-progress photos, John and Sandra Bohannon’s red rocket got the full-tilt treatment, including a complete body-off workup of the Chevy C1500 frame which was sprayed with Porsche Guards Red to match the heavily-massaged, thoroughly-smoothed Bow Tie sheetmetal.

It’s a shame to cover up all those slick and eye-catching chassis details with a cab and bed, even when they’re as stylish as the ones you see here. It’s a good thing John was able to snap these shots so that we could give you a unique look at exactly the type of customization that loads of time, effort, and yes, cash money can produce on a once stock hay-hauler.

1992 Chevrolet C1500 Engine View
Powering Bohannon’s beast is a 󈨢 5.7L LT1 Corvette small-block V-8, pumping out 350hp thanks to its sequential multi-point fuel injection, aluminum block and cylinder heads, and Jardine exhaust system. The torque is routed through a modified 4L60-E four-speed overdrive tranny and out to a custom-built driveshaft that’s hooked to the Vette rear diff. The Corvette small-block engine was an easy and obvious swap for a truck running on Vette suspenders. The hard part was getting the new engine&8217s computer wired up and communicating with the old truck-bred computer. After more than a bit of work by John, the two electronic brains were not only working together, they were, well, inseparable.
