OK, the Dakota T/A has the right muscle-truck look, but no Hemi. What's the alternative for sport-truck enthusiasts? Dodge offers a factory engine upgrade with a 4.7L High Output Magnum V-8. Replacing the 5.9L V-8 last used in 2003, this option delivers 260 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque (in contrast to 230 hp and 290 lb-ft on the standard 4.7L V-8). It is the only High Output V-8 engine in a compact or midsize pickup truck currently on the market. It is available only on SLT and Laramie models and requires the five-speed automatic transmission and the 3.92 axle ratio.
Where did Dodge find the extra ponies? Using proven performance mods, the High Output Magnum V-8 has a number of features that distinguish it from the standard 4.7L engine. These include new valvesprings to control valve motion, a revised combustion chamber shape that increases intake airflow volume, a more aggressive camshaft to increase high-speed airflow, and higher compression pistons (9.7:1 versus 9.0:1) to increase power.
To handle increased output, the internals were beefed up (which makes this a good candidate for supercharging). There's a forged-steel crankshaft for torsional stability, a revised crankshaft torsional vibration damper, and full-floating wristpins to enhance durability. In addition, the High Output engine features a specially tuned exhaust that provides a wonderfully deep V-8 growl.
