Time And Spark Distributor
1. Many things cause distributor failure. The GM distributor has a short bearing in the bottom of the housing. As the cam pushes on the gear from torque, it loads the bearing, making it wear. This is one of the many issues addressed by Orange County Speed.

Time And Spark Inner Diameter
7. The inner diameter of the bearing is slightly undersized to allow for a precession fitment. A roller broach swedges the bearing to the distributor housing for a good, tight fitment. Then the bearings are reamed to fit the distributor shaft.

Time And Spark Shaft
8. The shaft is slid and spun in the housing to assure no binding is taking place and that the alignment of the bearings are true. Although very minuscule, this procedure will increase power by reducing the amount of force necessary to spin the distributor's shaft and rotor. plus precision-fitment reduces wear.

Time And Spark Grease
9. Grease is squirted into the housing behind each bearing. As the bronze expands and contracts from heat, the pores of the material will actually absorb the grease and lubricate the shaft, preventing failure.

Time And Spark Pickup Coil
10. The seal, pickup coil, and ignition module are attached to the housing. The star-shaped device on the shaft is called the reluctor wheel. As the edges of the stars on both the reluctor and magnetic pickup align, it increases the resistance in the magnetic field. The ignition module senses this as a pulse signal and sends it out to the ignition system. The ignition then fires the coil in relation to the pulse signal.

11. The reluctor wheel is connected to the timing advance mechanism. The advance simple pushes the rotor forward as the engine rpm come up, which ignites the fuel earlier in the cycle to accommodate increased piston speed. The reluctor on the left has no advance stops. Orange County Speed welds stops onto the advance mechanism, then machines them down on the lathe for the desired amount of advance. This allows Orange County Speed to predetermine the amount of advance needed for the application.

13. Orange County Speed also reduces the friction in the timing advance by putting a curve in the timing advance weights. Both weights are clamped together to keep them symmetrical, then a radius is ground into them.

14. Here you can see that the curve put on the advance weights is small but effective. The left weight is stock and has a flat area where the weight pushes on the advance mechanism. The right weight is post-modification and has a radius for a smooth advance transition.

18. Here you can see that the ignition module is reading the pulses sent out by the magnetic pickup and reluctor. This machine spins the distributor at the desired rpm so that the timing advance setup can be confirmed.

Time And Spark Two Coils
19. There are two different coils that are used in the HEI setup. The coil on the right performs up to 6,000 rpm. The coil on the left has a much greater rpm range. With an optional module, its performance is good up to almost 9,000 rpm. The high-output coil is marked with red paint on the lead restraints. Keep in mind that all components are designed to work in unison. If you're building a tow rig that will never break 5,800 rpm, this is not the coil for you.

20. For those of us with hot rods or trucks with little to no room for the larger-diameter distributor, Orange County Speed adapts the HEI to all kinds of different distributors by remoting the ignition module.
