Flex A Lite Fan Nut
3. Loosening the big 1-7/16-inch nut that secures the fan to the front of the water pump can be a challenge. Loren says about the only way to do it is to place the wrench on the nut, then give it a quick blow with a hammer to break the nut free.

Flex A Lite Variable Speed Control
8. Flex-a-lite's instructions show the variable speed control mounted on the passenger side of the fan shroud, but Loren attached the control unit to the driver side because he felt it would be easier to run the wires cleanly across the top of the radiator and tuck them away under the plastic cover. First he drills two small holes, then secures the unit with the supplied screws.

12a. Here is what the finished wiring job looked like, with the wires running across the top of the radiator. Loren then covered the wires in plastic wiring loom and tucked them into the gap between the shroud and radiator. The control unit, meanwhile, features four diagnostic LEDs (three visible) and an access hole in the center that allows the user to adjust fan-on temperature.

13. Once the assembly was in place, Loren noted that the cover no longer fit properly, as it no longer had the stock shroud to attach to. Loren simply trimmed off this edge, giving the plastic cover a more OEM appearance.
