10. Tighten the rotor shaft nut to 40-50 lb-ft, using an 8mm hex bit on your torque wrench and a 24mm or 15/16-inch box wrench to secure the nut. Since you'll need to hold the nut stationary and rotate the shaft to use your torque wrench equipped with a hex bit, you'll need to rotate the rotor shaft counterclockwise. Use either a beam-type torque wrench, or if using a click type, make sure it's designed to be used in a left-hand direction. If your click-type torque wrench is only designed for right-hand rotation, you may damage the torque wrench.

11. If your alternator requires a custom mounting system, a wide variety of bracket systems are available through the performance aftermarket. Shown here is an example of an easy-to-install and clean-looking system for small-block Chevy applications. The kit consists of an aluminum bracket that bolts to the water pump and mounting bolts, and an adjustable link for alternator upper-ear support and belt adjustment.

The adjustable support for this type of mount features a pair of spherical bearing rod ends (often called Heim joints), each offering a 3/8-inch hole in the bearing, along with 3/8x24-inch male threaded studs. One rod end features right-hand threads, while the other features left-hand threads; this allows easy adjustment. By turning the hex-bodied coupler, the assembly will either shorten or elongate as needed. Once adjusted, the jam nuts are tightened to prevent the coupler from accidentally rotating on the threads.

13. The adjustable rod-end support attaches to the water pump with a 3/8x16-inch bolt, and to the upper alternator threaded ear with an 8x1.25mm bolt. A small adapter bushing is inserted in the 3/8-inch-diameter rod end bearing hole to eliminate slop. The adapter bushing is typically included in aftermarket mounting kits that use rod-end adjusters. Note the long adapter spacer used at the bottom mount; the spacer was provided in the aftermarket mount kit. Custom-length spacers are easily made by using steel - stainless steel or aluminum thick-wall tubes with 3/8-inch inside diameter - that's cut to length as needed. This approach results in a much neater appearance as opposed to using a stack up of flat washers.
