1. Our kit came with everything needed to install the product onto a Dodge Ram pickup, with the exception of wire cutters and a source of heat for the shrink tubing. We'll get to that later, though.

2. After trying to figure out how in the heck a gas damper would fit in that tiny space between the bed side and the tailgate, we got to work. Following the instructions, we removed the tailgate cable and its upper mount.

3. We replaced the upper mount with this machined aluminum mount that is extended to provide a place for the damper to go.

4. Moving downward to the tailgate, a lower mount was installed into an existing hole on the gate.

5. Next, the lower cable mount was unbolted from the gate, and the factory travel limiter was removed.

7a. To prevent the cable from rubbing on the damper body, a section of foam was slid onto the cable about halfway up its length and covered in shrink tubing. A pair of zip ties was then cinched around the tubing to keep it semi-permanently in place.

The Final Word
This is one of those deals where everyone wins. If there's a downside to installing this product, we can't find it. It bolts right in and works as advertised-and we love it when that happens.
