Part One: Front Installation Cont'd
The Skyjacker Front Crossmember snugs up against the factory crossmember and mounts to the factory control arm holes. Install the 14x150mm bolt, washers, and nut at the upper position in the frame where the crush sleeve was installed (inset). | | Attach the lower A-arms to the new Skyjacker crossmembers, using the factory hardware. Note: Skyjacker's design allows for use of aftermarket alignment kits. You can get them from a Ford dealer or directly from Skyjacker: order two of PN F462-AK. |
These next steps require a coil spring compressor, aka a strut master. Unload the tension on the upper mount of the factory coil assembly with the spring compressor. With the spring tension being held by the compressor, go ahead and remove the upper shock nut, using a 9/16 socket. Once the nut is off, you'll be able to slide the shock out from the bottom. | Remove the upper end cap from the factory shock. It can easily be tapped off with a rubber mallet. With the end cap removed, remove the lower coil seat from the shock (inset). | |
Now onto Skyjacker's New Lower Shock Mount. Install new bushings, sleeves, and zerk fitting (grease fitting) into the shock eye. Be sure to grease the bushings and sleeves, thoroughly. The zerk fittings can be easily tapped into place with the use of a 1/4-inch socket. Now, place the factory coil seat onto the aluminum coil seat retainer. | With the lower coil seat in place, dab two drops of thread-locking compound onto the threads of shock shaft, and screw it into the top of the aluminum coil seat retainer. Now the coilover assembly can be put back together like the factory unit came apart.Just to be safe, make sure to double-nut the center stem bolt and torque to 14 to 16 lb-ft. Important note: Do not use an air impact to install the nuts in this next step. If you overtighten the nuts, it will strip the threads. Once you have double-nutted the assembly, you can throw it back into vehicle and bolt it up with the factory hardware. | Now, it's time to install the new steering knuckle and torque the lower ball joint nut to 111 lb-ft and the upper to 85 lb-ft, using the factory hardware. Connect the outer tie rod, using the factory hardware, and torque to 111 |
Locate the factory brake line bracket on the framerail. Remove the bracket, and install the new drop bracket at that position. Attach the factory brake line bracket to the new bracket, using the 1/4x1-inch fine-thread bolts, washers, and nuts. Now, you can reinstall the rotors and brake stuff. | Install the new Skyjacker sway bar drop brackets. Attach them to the factory mount on the frame, using the factory hardware. Attach the sway bar to the new brackets, using the 7/16x1-1/2-inch fine-thread bolts, washers, and nuts. The brackets will install with the open portion toward the inside of the vehicle, with the pointed end toward the rear. Next, attach the sway bar links to the lower A-arms, using the OEM hardware. | On the backside of the knuckle, there is a new mounting location for the factory ABS line. Using the 3/8-inch Adel Clamp and bolts, attach the ABS line to the new location. It is important that this ABS line be positioned where it has free movement to slide through the clamp during the entire travel cycle (up, down, left, and right). Make sure it functions first and looks neat next. After all that work, the front should look like this. |
