A code scanner will help you determine what is wrong with your truck by talking to the ECU, so this is a valuable tool. Luckily, Actron makes one for every budget, from a simple $20 unit, all the way up to a $500-plus scanner. How much you plan on working on OBD-1 and -2 vehicles should help you decide which scanner is right for you. Unfortunately, in the smartest move of the weekend, I disconnected the battery for more than an hour, which cleared the ECU of any stored codes, so I never got to read them.

Here is the first part that was installed, Holley's TBI unit. This is no rebuilt piece; this sucker is all-new. It is fitted with new sensors and injectors. It flows 650 cfm, which is more than enough for our stock 4.3, but at least it will support any upgrades performed later.

2. Once everything was marked, I removed the fuel lines, IAC valve (idle air control), and TPS (throttle position sensor) electrical connections, along with the four bolts holding the TBI unit to the manifold.
