4. Once the TBI was off, a few rags were stuffed into the intake to prevent dirt and debris from getting in there. A shop vacuum will get rid of anything else that is sitting on the intake.

7. The new Fram filter replaced the old unit and was easy to install. A set of locking pliers on the rubber hose exiting the gas tank will keep the fuel from running out during the swap. Just remember to remove the pliers before crawling out from under the truck, or you might be scratching your head as to why it won't start later.

8. Over at the bench, the two fuel fittings that are in the back of the TBI were transferred to the Holley unit. Make sure you get these pretty tight, because you don't want a fuel leak later.

10. The new TBI assembly fits just like the factory piece, even though it features larger throttle bores. Holley uses a tapered base gasket to transition down to the smaller holes in the manifold. When it's time for upgrades, all I have to do is machine the manifold for the larger holes, and even more air will get into the motor, but that will be later.

11. The TV cable for the transmission needed to be reset, which is easy on this truck. All that is necessary to adjust this sucker is to push in on the metal detent (arrow) and slide the cable housing all the way back. After the cable is hooked to the TBI, it will self-adjust the first time the accelerator pedal is pushed to the floor.

1a. Throttle Body Tuning
Before moving on to the next set of parts, I wanted to fire the truck and make sure the TBI unit was working properly. That way, I would know where to look for any issues that might pop up. Thanks to the Haynes guide, I had a complete step-by-step walk-through for the initial setup of a new TBI. The IAC valve, TPS, and idle need to be set, but first I needed to make a small jumper wire.

1b. This will plug into the A and B terminals of the Assembly Line Data Link (ALDL) plug, located under the dash near the fuse panel. The A and B terminals are the top two on the far right. With the jumper in place, I turned the key to the on position, waiting 30 seconds before unplugging the IAC.

2. Now, per the instruction, I started the truck and let it come up to operating temp before setting the idle to 700 rpm. Once the idle was set, I shut off the truck, removed the jumper wire, and plugged the IAC back in.

3. I turned the key back to the on position one more time, so the TPS could be set. The TPS on the Holley unit is adjustable, thanks to the slotted holes in the side, which is not always an option with the factory pieces. The sensor needed to be set to 0.65 volts. Using a paper clip to make some probes, I tapped into the black and the blue wires. Now a multimeter will tell me what the TPS is reading.
