1. The Install
In order to install the harness, the factory radio needed to be unbolted from the dash. To gain access to the bolts, I removed the dash bezel, which is held on by a few simple clips. Once I had the radio out, I unplugged it from its OE harness.

2. The GM12-R1 harness has four open wires for power hookups. The two red wires are to power any additional audio accessories, but I had no use for them and closed them off with electrical tape. I proceeded to use some quick-disconnect wire terminals I got from a local hardware store to connect the power and ground wires for the interface. The yellow wire was connected to the large orange constant 12-volt power wire on the factory harness. Then the black wire was connected to the black/white ground wire.

3. With the power and ground wires set on the PIE harness, I plugged it into the GM12-IPOD/S interface.

4. PIE provides enough wire on the iPod plug to reach between the center console and the dash-mounted interface. Since I plan on keeping the iPod in the glovebox, I fished the proper amount of wire to connect to the interface and zip-tied the rest of the wire to a secure location in the dash.

5. All that was left was to connect the OE and GM12-R1 harnesses to the radio. You can see that the PIE harness plugs right into an existing XM port on the back of the head unit.

6. With the interface wired up, I reinstalled the radio. Then, I simply reinstalled the factory bolts to secure it in place and snapped on the dash bezel to complete the procedure.
The Final Word
After the install, I plugged in the iPod and placed it in the glovebox. The controls are overridden, and the battery charges simultaneously. Now I can use the band button on the radio to toggle between AM, FM, and iPod. From there, the preset buttons allow for navigation through playlist, artist, album, and genre. This interface works well while maintaining the factory look of the interior. The system is stealthy and should keep my truck under the radar of the evil stereo bandits.
